ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
BOY DROWNED WHILE BATHING (BY telegraph—press association.) PALMERSTON N., Feb. 14. A distressing drowning fatality occurred at Moanaroa, near the mouth of the Rangitikei river, yesterday afternoon, the victim being Ernest James Brightwell, aged 17. The youth was swimming with his sister, and when the tide was receding, about three o’clock, both were noticed to be in difficulties a short- distance from the shore. Both were carried out, but the girl was rescued with a lifeline. The hoy sank about 200 yards out in full view of his parents and spectators before assistance could be got to him.
CHILD FATALLY INJURED. CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 12. Agnes Joyce Swanson, aged six years, was fatally injured at Selwyn yesterday by being run over by a mowing machine on a farm. She had been pllayingi an a crop of peas. MOTOR CYCLIST SEVERELY f HURT. AUCKLAND 1 , Feb. 13. A fall from a, motor-cycle at Ponsoreby early this morning' resulted in James Okane, aged 26, receiving severe injuries to the head. He was evidently riding so close to the edge of the road that the machine struck a tree bordering the road. The patient was still unconscious this afternoon. GIRL DROWNED IN SWIMMING BATHS. WELLINGTON, Feb. 13. Lyle Margaret Stella Riatelifie, aged 10* * years, was drowned on Saturday afternoon in the Thorndon baths when going to the assistance ol Minnie Day, who had- got- out of her depth. The caretaker, Edward Frank James Waters, was informed that a girl's clothes were in a dressing room, and the girl could not be found. He dived in, swam under the water, .and found the girl lying on the bottom face upwards. The baths were crowded, but no spectator of the occurrence can be found. \
MOTOR OAR OVERTURNS GISBORNE, Feb, 13. Shortly before eleven o’clock last night a taxi driven by Mr. A. Litfcler, went over a bridge between _Ka.ite.ratahi land Te Karaka, sand capsized into the bed of the creek, eight feet below. One passenger, named Robert- Scott, 3S yeans of age, with no relatives in the Dominion, employed as a bush worker at Terata station, Whatatutu. was killed. Another passenger. Mrs. Denton, i Maori woman, i.s now in. hospital with body injuries which,'so- flair as is known at p’-esetnt, are not serious. Two other men passengers and the driver escaped with b.rui-ses. GORED BY A BULL, AUCKLAND, Feb. 14. At Kuimi Show on Saturday Mr. R.ichiard Davis, one of the judges, was savagely attacked in the ring by a large Holstein bull and was badly gored in the thigh before the/ animal K>uld be beaten off. BODY FOUND IN A QUARRY WHAKATANE, Feb. 14. The body of a. man was found in the borough quarry on Saturday. It has been identified ia« that of John Burns, aged 45, a labourer who had recently come' to- Whakatane -and was engaged in haymaking on the Rangitaiki Plains. A bottle of methylated spirits was found near the body. GI RL KILLED IN MOTORING ACCIDENT. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 14. While motoring to Colac on Sunday morning, a- ear driven by Mr. Bruce Ireland became unmanageable in the loose gravel and capsized. Miss Phyllis Fleming, aged 20 was killed instantly her head being crushed by the back seat. Her father, Herbert Fleming a. well-known flourm-il-ler of Gore, was also severely crushed, all his ribs on one side- being broken. His condition is serious. Mrs. Ireland suffered from cuts and shock, but was able to proceed home. ANOTHER. BATHING FATALITY. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 14. Davicl McGregor, a draper of Riverton, while bathing in the Aparimn on Sat till’d ay evteming, was seized with cramp and immediately sank. His body was recovered promptly by the others who were bathing in the vicinity,- but life wias extinct. DROWNED IN THE SURF. HASTINGS, Feb. 14. While- bathing ;in the rough surf at Waini-arama beach yesterday. Alexander Mitchell Wighton, aged 48, a married farmer of Hastings', got into difficulties in. the strong undertow and was drowned, notwithstanding the efforts c ftiho.se in the water and on <-ho.re, who organised a life saving team. Miss Doris Bone, who- swam to Wighton to warn him not to go too far, got into difficulties herself, but she was isecured. Pat. Barker went outwit "a line, but could not locate Wighton and had to be hauled -aisboie. Soon after deceased’s body was sighted and was brought to- land, but all efforts to revive him- failed. A bather at Hauma-na beach, yesterday was rescued, but only with difficulty.
