MOTOR BOAT RACING.
INTERESTING CONTESTS AT WANGANUI. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WANGANUI, Jan. 28. The Wanganui regatta on Saturday was attended by five to six thousand people. There was beautiful weather and exciting sport. Great interest centred in the Masport Cup race, the speed championship of New Zealand, which was iron by Alderton Bros.’ J. and J. (Wanganui) by 55 seconds from the Auckland boat Fleetwing Junior, the course being 15 nautical miles. The time was 26min 25sec. The Kotuku (Wanganui) also started, but broke down. The Nonesuch . (North Auckland), Miss Cheltenham (Auckland), and Little Jim (Wanganui) were nonstarters owing to engine trouble. In the Helean -Cup handicap race, One Step (Wanganui) caught fire, and Spot Second (Auckland) overturned on a bend. Fleetwing Junior was first over and won the -prize money, hut the J. and J. made the fastest time and was awarded the cup. The Maori events were very interesting. Ngaruawahia visitors being very successful. At the close of the regatta, the J. and J. made a dash to establish a New Zealand speed record and touched 50 miles an hour.
