EARLY SETTLER PASSES
MR. DAVID THOMAS LEAHY. ■ Evict, nee of the high esteem in which the late Mr David Thomas. Leahy whose death at Noradeen Private Hospital at New Plymouth on Wednesday iolowed a lingering illness, was held was given when at his funeral at Opunake yesterday a very large number of friends and associates attended to pay thenlast respects. . , , Mr Leahy was born in Limerick, Ireland, 72 years ago, and had been a resident in New Zga'and for about 50 years. He came to Taranaki in ’79, and was a servant of the Railway Department. Prior to the Te Whiti trouble, lie joined the Armed Constabulary and gave valuable service. He later , took up land on the Eltham Road, where be resided until the time of his final illness. He is survived by Mrs Leahy and two sons. Patrick and Joseph, to whom will be extended the deepest sympathy of a large circle of friends. Requiem mass was celebrated yesterday morning, and early yesterday afternoon the cortege, which included about 40 cars, left St. Mary’s Church for the Opunake Cemetery. Father Kennedy officiated at- the church and at the graveside. The pail-bearers were Messrs J. Hickev. P. Conaglen, F. Rolands, J. Mcßeynolds. M. O’Rorke. and R. b’Brien. * . . , , Trumpeter Jas. Higgins, who had been attached to No. 3 Company of the Armed Constabulary, in which the late Mr Leahy sounded the “Last Post.”
