ATTEMPTED BURGLARY

OF TOBACCONIST’S PREMISES.

As Constable Mullan was walking along High Street, Hawera, last evening, he. heard sounds which seemed to emanate from the interior of J. Fraser and Sons’ tobacconist shop. The constable proceeded with despatch to ascertain the reason for the noises, which suddenly ceased, indicating that the would-be burglars sensed that they had been observed. That the transgressors of the law were alarmed and escaped Irom the back of the premises was revealed by an inspection of the rear door. Holes had been bored in it, apparently for the purpose of effecting an entry. The indications do not seem to suggest the operation of a particularly dangerous gang of men, the object of the attempted entry, being probably cigarettes and petty cash.
