NIGHT SPORTS.

The nignu opcu'ts which will be conducted by tiie naweia Amateur Atnletic Uiuu on w eunesday next promise to be the best ever seen in Hawera. me nominations are an outstanding record, there being 100 competitors tailing their places in the various events. This big nomination list includes some brilliant athletes, R. A. Itose, the world-famed athlete, and C. Flett, the brilliant cyclist from Wellington, being .specially featured on the programme. H. E. B. Newton, from Wanganui, who is the next best athlete nominated, has several, championships to his credit, and during last January and February ran some sensational half and quarter-mile races. He ran half-miles consistently in 2min lsec, and quarter-miles in 51 and 52sec. The handieapper is not taking any chances with Newton, who is getting only five vards from Rose in the 880 yards event. Gilmour (New Plymouth), Fraser (Patea), Rumball (Hawera) and Gibbons (Marton) are other back markers in this event, who are sure to fully extend the champion. Rose, who will be better suited over the mile, his favourite distance. There is no doubt that the 880 yards run and the mile run will be two thrilling events. Flett, the Wellington cyclist, who will compete, is reported to be riding up to form, and is sure to create considerable interest in all the cycle events in which he starts. He is giving good cyclists like Stening and Griffin 40 and 55 yards in a mile and proportionate starts in the two-mile event, so that it will be seen that he is a rider much above the average. Whether he will be able to catch the big fields in front of him remains to be seen. The lighting of the track has been wonderfully improved, and a good view of the events is assured. The Hawera Municipal Band will provide the music. Competitors who have not been issued with numbers are requested to obtain same immediately from Mr A. L. Palmer, Union street. Additional handicaps are: H. E- B. Newton (Wanganui). —100 yards (syds), 220 yards (10yds), 880 yards (syds). H. E. Edmondson (Wanganui). —100 vards (7vds), 220 yards (13vds).
