OHAWE BEACH.
BATHING SHED IMPROVEMENTS. DAMAGE FROM LAST WEEfi’S GALE. Indications are that the Ohawe beach will be more popular than ever this coming season. ’ The number of . cottages built by people of the district increases steadily and several have been erected since last year. ' The beach committee, ever alive to the best interests of the community, arranged a working bee some time ago, and though not a great number turned up, excellent work was done, with the result that the present dressing sheds have been enlarged to about twice their former size. But more funds are required to, provide a further supply of roofing iron, and donations will be very •welcome. As the work done is in the interest's of the whole district, the pro-, •motors are confident that this appeal will be effectively answered. Messrs S. J. : Catran and P. J. Mnllan are the organisers of the . effort. The severe gales of the past few weeks were severely felt at the beach, and one night last week the whole of the roof of the house on the cliff occupied by one or two Maoris, but better known as Hayward’s, was blown off. The river Waingongoro, swollen by the rain and the melting snow from the mountain, has been running very high during the last two days, and bringing down a great deal of logs and other material. . The road from the beach, though quite passable, has , suffered a good deal, in the lower portion. It is hoped the county council will be ‘able to make some improvements this year.
