PROPOSED MUSEUM.
A VALUABLE OFFER
MAORI CURIOS AND OTHER RELICS.
A correspondent interested! in the subject of the proposed museum in Hawe.ra, but who wishes his name withheld for the. present,, ha® made, an offer of great value to the promoter® of the project. In a. letter to a member of the Star staff dealing with the matter, he says, inter alia: “There is no doubt that it would! he an acquisition to the town, and- would offer safe; housing for _ » great many antiques, relies and curios that would otherwise leave the district; \ I have always had a-’ fancy for collecting curios and Maori Tolies, and since I have l>een a,t —, — I have got hold ’ of a 1 good many »(about 100) axes and » adzes. Also on the sandhill® I have found various fragments of bone, fish hooks, and l a lot of stone drills and rubbing stones, hammer stones, ( fern pounders, etc. Also I have a 'good' many specimens of insects, spiders, fish, etc., preserved in spirits, and a few war souvenirs: a few sci'aps of flint lock guns from Te Ngutu-o-te-Manu, and various pieces of shell and shrapnel from Te Arei redoubt, near W aitara. I cannot mention all in a letter, but I would be willing to loan all of my stuff to the museum if ■started. My house is too small to display it, and that sort of thing should not be hidden.” The correspondent has given his permission for the offer to be mentioned to those who are keenly interested, adding that he would be pleased! to show them what lie has if they care to come out to see him, and this has been communicated to the citizens who are moving in the matter.
