GIRL GUIDE NOTES.

(By “Guider.” )

The .school holidays -are over and Guides -ate xio>v «etu.iXig ,uwvu to cue business of getting ifiroiigu cueir isecOnu-cuiss test, -v or, once we nave won roe c-oveceu greeu. sininiiocK Gauge of the .second-class, tnerc .are a host or badges which by cuhgent am famiim wont we may acquire, 'to mention omy n lew, mere. me -roibuiance, i/askei Worker, Bird Lover, C-hilct -surse, Cueriv, cook, Dairymaid, Handy Woman, Health, Horsewoman, Musician, Swimmer, Entertainer, and Hostess. For all these badges properly qualified examiners ate appointed among people outside the Ciude movement. x>v the time our first, birthday arrives (June 5 next) Guiders hope to see the the sleeves oi uniforms decorated with these nicest of trimmings. Writing on badge tests in the Dominion Gui Guide, our Dominion Commissioner, Mrs. B. H. Wilson, lays down -some hard and fast rules ior the winning of badges. She says that be? fore entering for a test Guides must so have prepared themselves that there is a reasonable -likelihood of their success. The standard is kept high and only the earnest workers may hope to succeed. • At the conclusion ot her article, our Commissioner .says: “Remember, once you wear a badge, you put yourself in a, position of being called -upon to do whatever that badge stands for; its not for the examination only, its ‘ for Tile—to help you to do things well and to feel the joy oi being proficient.” 1 . With-regard to child nursing, this is a. branch of guiding which we New Zealanders could make peculiarly our own. Nowhere else in the world has child nursing received-so much thought nor is there any better system than that of our Sir Truby Icing’s Plunket system. ”At the Dominion Commissioners’ Conference held in Wellington in February of this, year, the following resolution was passed: “The Plunket system to be included: in -the work of Child Nurse badge; also, a Maori badge instituted to revive interest in Maori weaving, dancing and folk songs, legends, etc.”

All Guides will congratulate Patrol Leaders, Dorothy Hoo-per and Peggy Morris, as they are the two first girls in the company to gain their secondclass. Special honour is due to Dorothy as she knew nothing of Guiding when .she joined the company. However, Peggy worked well to “recapture” the knowledge gained as « Guide i-u Auckland. A number of others are almost through. It has been hard going, but worth it, as all Guides will admit. When these notes appear we shall probably have been inspected by our Divisional Commissioner, Mrs. F. S. Hod-son. We all hope that she will be pleased with our progress. We shall also have held another enrolment in Hawera, the third in our short life of three months. We certainly seem to jje growing as fast as the- famous beanstalk. It speaks volumes for the joy we are all getting out of Guiding. Miss Alice Behrens, Deputy Chief Commissioner for the North of England, County Commissioner for South Lancashire, and Imperial Head of training, has'arrived in Sydney. Miss Behrens will later come to New' Zealand. Her headquarters iii England is the lovely Guide training ho,me -presented to Guides -by Mrs. Archhold and now known as the Princess Mary Home. No doubt Provincial rallies will be held throughout the Dominion to enable us all to meet Miss Behrens. Certificates of registration for the Hawera- Company of Guides and for the Brownie Pack have now been received. These are handsomely illuminated qnd bear the signature of our beloved founder and Chief Guide, Sir Rbbert Baden-Powell. ,
