PERSONAL ITEMS.
(Mrs. L. O. Hooker, who has undertaken the general direction of the work of arranging for the, feeding of the school children who will visit Hawera during Winter Show Week, will be in town from Tuesday next. At last night’s meeting of the Empire Week committee, the good work done by the late Mr. D. J. Goodwin was referred to by the chairman and a. resolution of sympathy with Mrs. Goodwin and family was passed in silence, members standing a few moments in respect to his memory. Very generous appreciation of Mr. T. S. Hickey’s service as editor-manager of the Northland Age (Kaitaia) was voiced at the annual meeting of the company recently, the. following resolution being carried: “The directors of the Mangonui Newspaper Go., Ltd., desire to place on record their appreciation of the highly efficient manner in which Mr. T. S. Hickey managed the financial side of the Company's business, and the alert and vigorous manner in which he directed the Age, his individual literary style and wide general knowledge effecting a marked improvement in the tone of the paper. The directors also wish to express their regret at losing Mr. Hickey’s services, and to tender him their best wishes for his future success.” Mr. Hickey was formerly proprietor of the' Opunake Times.
