BUTTER CONTROL.
VIEW OF CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETIES. DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS FEARED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 2.45 p.m. to-day, LONDON, Alay 17. In the House of Commons, in a debate on the Board of Trade estimates, Mr A. V. Alexander, a cooperator, said that co-operative soeietiees in no wise liked the outlook arising from the proposed operations of the New Zealand Control Board. They were of the . opinion that the effect of ocntroi would be to raise prices to the British consumer. The board would control importers on this -side, which was an important matter, because 22 per cent, of our butter and. 14 per cent, of cheese came from New Zealand. If it were going to function to the detriment of British traders, the Board of Trade ought to make representations to the Dominion Government. Mr Alexander remarked incidentally that Siberian and Argentine butters were improving in quality, and would compete with increasing -severity with New Zealand. —Reuter.
