BETTING TAX BILL.
BRITISH PROPOSAL. STRINGENT PENALTIES PROVIDED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 2.30 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Alay 17. Stringent penalties are set forth in the Betting Tax Bill, which was published to-day. The measure empowers a magistrate to endorse a bookmaker’s certificate in the case of a misdemeanour, as motorists’ licenses are now endorsed; also, if necessary,, to suspend the certificate. The Bill imposes a penalty of £IOO on a bookmaker who endeavours to obtain a certificate during a period of disqualification. The police are empowered to enter any premises devoted to betting and arrest, without warrant, anybody accepting a bet without issuing a revenue ticket or failing to produce- a bookmaker’s certificate on demand. A penalty of £SOO is enforceable in the case- of ativ contravention of the law.
