KURIL' WHILE CHOPPING WOOD. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.,) PAHIATUA, May 18. Noel Workman, a railway employee, who was attending a local Manchester Older of Oddfellows function, was in the act of chopping come wood with aii| exceedingly sharp axe, which, glanced off and cut deply into his ankle. He was removed, to the hospital. FARMER’S UNION CONFERENCE. WANGANUI May 18. Tlhe combined annual inter-provincial conference of the New Zealand Farmer’,s Union opened here to-day. Delegates from Manawatu, Wairarapa,, Wanganui, and Wellington districts were present in large numbers. Mr. O, O. Jaictkson, Wairarapa,- presided. The conference concludes to-morrow. A WOMAN MISSING. TAUMARUNIU 1, May 18. Mrs. Reginald Young, aged 23, has been missing from her home since Sunday night. She left a, note saying that she would not be seen again. The -police suspect that her body will be found in the Wanganui River, which is being dragged. Friends of the missing woman consider that it is possible that .she has gone to Auckland. ALLEGED THEFT. TAIHAPE, May IS. A clerk recently employed by the Taihape Borough Council was charged this morning with . having, between .July 1 and March 31 stolen and fraudulently converted to his own use the sum of £99 13s lid, the property of the Taihape Borough Council The accused was remandecl till May 25. Bail was allowed, self in £IOO and two sureties of £SO each. ' A BOOKMAKER. FINED. CHRISTCHURCH, May 18. In the Magistrate’s Court, James Joseph Arnold was fined £2O on each of two charges of making bets on the Amber ley races. FIRE AT TOLAGA BAY. GISBORNE, May 18. Two houses, occupied by Mr Ross and Mr Lawrence, were destroyed at Tolaga Bay. This was the first fire in the township for 12 years.
