DEATH OF A JOCKEY.
INQUEST AT AUCKLAND. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, April 13. The inquest concerning the death of Edward Preston, a jockey, as the result of injuries received through his horse falling at a hurdle while racing at the Takapuna Jockey Club’s, summer meeting on January 30, was concluded to-day before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. as coroner. Angus" Gordon, stipendiary steward, said that after the hurdle race on the first day, January 29, Rennie, a jockey, went to him and said he considered one of the hurdles too vertical. “This was incorrect,” witness said. “I examined the one complained of, and found it complied with the standard laid down by the Racing Conference. In fact all the hurdles on the course had more lean on them than was required.” • In reply to" the coroner,, the witness said that in future there would! be no hurdle races on the Takapuna course The coroner returned a. verdict that deceased died as the result of_ injuries received through being accidentally thrown from a horse- In view of the decision of the Racing Conference that there would be no more hurdle races on the course, there was no need to add a rider.
