A BIG HAUL
JEWELLER’S SHOP LOOTED.
INCREASE IN BANDITRY INSURANCE RATES INCREASED
BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION—COPYEIGni’. Received 10 a.m. to-day. NEW YORK, March 14. While the Metropolitan Retail Jewellers’ Association announced that the plate and retail jewellery stores would close for one day as- a protest against inadequate police protection, and a demand for increasing the force by 25,000 men, one of the most sensational diamond burglaries occurred at the busiest street corner, five armed men robbing a jeweller and escaping with 100,000 dollars in gems. . The unending increase in banditry resulted in the announcemet of an increase in rates by the National Bureau casual and surety underwriters by 15 per cent for burglary insurance on residences and hotels, bringing the figures in some instances to nearly four cents on the dollar. It is pointed out that even with the increased rates brokers have .found it difficult to place risks, since the companies are accepting only a limited number. Insurance men say that little loot is being recovered because the thieves are disposing of the goods thi-ough “fences” and not pawnshops.—At and N.Z. Assn.
