WAR IN CHINA.
JAPANESE DESTROYERS FIRED ON. BY FORTS AT TAKU. BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION—COPYEIGHT. PEKIN, March 12. While two of four Japanese destroyers from Tangku were attempting to proceed up the river, they were fired on by the T-aku forts with machine guns and field batteries. Two ratings were wounded, as well as a Japanese military officer who was' temporarily aboard, and a Japanese pilot. The destroyers decided to abandon the attempt, und returned to Tangku. At present it is not. clear whether they returned the fire. The Japanese Consul-General at Tientsin is lodging a strong protest. Commenting on the firing on the Japanese destroyers, an authority at the Foreign Office said that the matter was regarded seriously, but the Government was awaiting further details before deciding what action should be taken. It was probable that nothing but a vigorous protest- would he made, as he thought the firing was most likely due to a misunderstanding.
