MANAIA.

A general meeting of subscribers to the Manaia Public Library was held on Tuesday evening. Present: Messrs T. A. Bridge (chair), W. Snowdon, W. Vincent, B. Badland, J. Poynter, J. Cosgrove and Dr. Davies. A good deal of business in connection with the public? library was transacted during the evening. Four more magazines have been ordered, as well as a variety of books by the best authors, and the library is well equipped at present in literature. A general meeting of the Manaia Hibernian and District Sports Club was held on Tuesday evening. There was a very large attendance present, Mr J. Landers pi’esiding in the absence of the president, Mr J. A. Hansen. The meeting was a most enthusiastic one, and every detail is well in hand for the forthcoming sports on Saturday. The entries are a record, ■especially in the cycle sections. Some of the best riders in New Zealand will be. competing, and this year’s spoi'ts will without xi doubt be a l’ecord. The following business was dealt with during the evening: Advice was- received that a committee of ladies had consented to arrange for a refreshment booth, and the necessai’y preparations had been made. Donations of £5 each wei - e received from three publicans for the race to be known as the Publicans’ Handicap. Messrs Landers, G. Burke and G. Edwards were appointed to arrange repairs to the fence alongside the track. jYtr S. Greaves was appointed to arrange, if possible, for the closing of business premises in the town between 12.30 and 4 p.m. on the day of the sports.
