NEW AUSTRALASIAN RECORD,

LAY THROWS JAVELIN 181 ft 7in

In an exhibition javelin throw at the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club’s sports last evening, Stanley Lay the implement a distance of 181 ft. Tin., thereby exceeding by 2ft. tTiJin. his own Australian and New Zealand, record made six weeks ago, .when he added 4ft. Ifin. to the then existing record. By last evening’s throw, an addition of 6ft 9in. has been made to E l . G. Sutherland’s 1922 Australian and New Zealand record of 174 ft. lOin. As darkness had fallen when the throw was made, conditions were not of the best and Lay may be expected to improve hid distance still more in the near future. The new record-holder is nineteen years old and a splendid all-round athlete. He is a Taranaki representative cricketer, and last season played for the provincial “B”. Rugby team. SPORTS AT HAWERA. SUCCESSFUL MEETING. Another successful electric light carnival was held by the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club last evening, when some keen racing was witnessed. As the meeting was the last but one for the present season, members of the club made feverish bids to secure points for the championship eups and trophies. Probably the most keenly -contested race of all was the 75 yards handicap, in the final of which M. Clark and C. Shore dead-heated for first, practically all the competitors ■finishing within a yard. The three heats of the secondary. school boys’ 120 yards were interesting, and the final, which was won by R. Morrissey, was closely fought out -with A. Clement, who was placed second. The success of W.. Kelly was a feature of the cycle events, he securing two firsts and one second in the three races in which he competed. In the 300 ya r ds handicap L. S. Hulbert was placed first, with S. Shore second, in a very hard race run in excellent time. The distance event of 1000 yards went to K. Ballantyne, with. A. Rumball, the virtual scratch man, close behind second.

The meeting was excellently controlled by the officials and committee of the. club, who did good -work in despatching the races promptly. Detailed results follow:
