ESCAPEE SORRY.
CONSTABLE BKGG’S DEATH. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) . AUCKLAND, Feb. 25. Smith, the recaptured prsoner, appeared in the Magistrate’s Couit tins morning, charged with having escaped from custody. He was remanded to March 4. “It was unfortunate about the death of Constable Begg,” he said, “but if 1 had known such an accident might happen, I would never have got away. However, it is clone now, and what’s done can’t be undone. I’ve made this bed for myself, so 1 suppose 1 will have to lie in it.”
