ECHO OF SEAMEN’S STRIKE.
OBJECTION TO PASSENGERS
(BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 24.
An aftermath of the recent seamen’s strike occurred in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when the inspector of awards claimed from six firemen, A. G. Halswell, E. Harman, Thos. Miles, S. Rudd and A. Collinger, £lO each for an alleged breach of contract. The circumstances surrounding the prosecution were that the firemen on the steamer Ngaio refused to take the ship to sea on acconut of the fact that four passengers who had served as volunteer seamen during the October strike were on board. The men had intimated that if these passengers were kept on board they would not take the vessel to sea. The steamer returned to the wharf and the passengers were induced to disembark, though they protested. For the defence it was contended the action was not a strike, but merely threatened disobedience. Decision was reserved.
