SMITH RECAPTURED.
FORTY MILES AWAY. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 24. Advice was received by the police to-night that Thomas Smith, the prisoner who escaped by leaping from a train in the Parnell tunnel yesterday, has been recaptured at Pokeno, about forty miles away.
A MOTORIST’S RUSE. PRISONER HELD FOR POLICE. AUCKLAND, Feb. 25. The capture of Thomas Smith was brought about by a resident of Pokeno notifying an adjacent police party that he had a suspect passenger in his car, and was keeping the car held up on the pretence that the engine needed adjustment. The police surrounded the building, and one of them pntered, and recognised Smith, who surrendered quietly. He had secured a partial change of clothing- and had £l2 in money. As marks of his escape there were a.scar on liis right hand and abrasions on his right knee and shinbone. Prisoner was brought to Auckland last night.
