The shipping; hold-up has had a serious effect on the employment of casual railway workers at Christchurch and hvttelton. The number of casuals who secure work in Christchurch goods sheds i,s in the vicinity of 120, and about 80 have been idle during the past week vs a direct result of the strike of British seamen. The first attempt to demolish .the wrecked Cyreua at Wanganui was made on Tuesday afternoon, when about 3001 b of explosives were used. A shot was put in just near the boiler, and it proved Quite a success. The intention is to break up the parts where the boilers are located. The explosion was beard a long distance off, but its effect was not at all serious on -any houses adjacent to the waterfront. It is expectedi that about three tons of explosives will be required to clear away the wreckage completely. The Wanganui Harbour Board authorities and other people concerned are endeavouring to carry out the demolition operations witliout damage to the mole, against which the after part of the Cyrena- is resting.
