THE SHIPPING DISPUTE. RESTORING NORMAL ,SERVICES. JOB CONTROL ABOLISHED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYEIGHT. MELBOURNE, July 31. The full shipping conference adopted the sub-committee’s agreement, thus ending the long drawn out dispute, but it is expected that it will be. several days before the normal services are restored. The agreement provides for the abolition of the roster system, but the owners will continue to engage men at the Mercantile Marine offices during the hours of the old agreement, and apply to the Seamen’s Union offices when casual vacancies are to be filled. An agreement embodying these terms is to be signed by both parties for a period of eighteen months. It is expected tli e agreement will be signed on Saturday. In this event mass meetings of the men will he helfi in all States on Monday, and the ships will be declared “white” on Tuesday.
FURTHER! PARTIOULARS. Received Aug. 1, 10.55 a.m. MELBOURNE, Aug. 1. The -seamen's -agreement has to be ratified by the unions concerned before it becomes binding. it is expected that this will be done by Monday and picking up will commence on Tuesday or earlier. The terms of the proposed agreement have been transmitted to the various branches by lettergram. The owners, in a -statement after the meeting, if endorsed by the branches of the union, would belonged by the -representatives of the Seamen’s U nion and backed by the unions of the transport group. This action would ensure an effective guarantee of the abolition o-f job control, which had been insisted on all along by the owners as a- condition of settlement.
