ANTI-EVOLUTION.

SCOPES ON TRIAL. BV CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT. NEW YORK, July 15. : At the trial of John Scopes at Day-; ton, Tennessee, on a charge that he taught the Darwinian theory of evolution in violation of a recent Tennessee statute forbidding instruction on matters contrary to the letter of the Bible on the subject of creation, Mr Malone, one of the counsel for the defence, said his purpose was to show that the Bible was a work of religion, which must be kept in the field of theology and not allowed to obtrude into the scientific field. “We believe in God’s spirit, and those worshipping Him must worship in spirit and in truth,” lie added. The prosecution to succeed must prove that Scopes’ theory was a denial of the story of Divine creation of man as the Bible teaches, and instead that he taught that man was descended from the lower animals. The defence proposed to make it perfectly clear by~ the testimony of men learned in science and theology that millions of people who believe in evolution and believe in the Bible story of creation found no conflict between these two. Twice during the trial the prosecution had referred to man aa descended from monkeys. That was not the view of the defence. No scientist of any prominence held .such a view. The most that science said to-dav was that one order of men-like mammals was capable of walking erect and using its forefeet as hands.
