NO GOVERNOR-GENERAL.
■ LABOUR. WOULD DO AWAY WITH OFFICE. A MEASURE OF ECONOMY. HY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT OTTAWA, June 16. The abolition, of the post of Gover-nor-General was recommended by Mr J. S. Woodsworth, a Labour member in the House of Commons, when a vote for the expenses of maintaining the Governor-General’s residence was before the House. Mr Woodsworth was supported by another Labour member, Mr Irvine, of Calgary, both disclaiming any intention of disparaging the present or any other incumbent of the post. The recommendation of Mr Woodsworth was declared to be in the interests of economy. He thought the Chief Justice of" Canada should discharge the duties and save the expense, which he estimated at 500,(XX) dollars yearly. The Minister for Railways (the Hon. G. P. Graham), who is leading the House, said Lord Byng had proved himself a man of the people, a real man and a democrat. So long as the Imperial Government sent to Canada such a man as Lord Byng he felt Canada would he benefited by the present system nf appointing governors. / The discussion was then dropped.
