NOT HIDDEN

NATIONALIST ASPIRATIONS. COMPLETE IN DEPENDENCE. SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received May . 18, 10 a.m CAPETOWN, May 17, The Nationalist organ, Oils Va-der-land, referring to the statement of the Prime Minister (Mr. Hertzog} made in the Assembly on April 28 regarding secession, says . that there was no necessity to break the promise given to the Labourites when the pact between the two parties was made not to raise the secession issue for five years. The paper points out that the Nationalists’ struggle had always been for realisation of the ideal of absolute and sovereign independence. It sees no reason to describe Britain as “our great enemy,” but it does not see why she should be referred to as “on r best friend,” a phrase which causes pain to thousands of Afrikanders, to whom England remains the conqueror of our nationhood and our sovereign independence. We wish to regain that independence, and we dq not propose hiding our purpose.” — -Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
