FARMERS’ UNION

The annual meeting of the 'Auroa branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was held in the hall on. Saturday evening. • . Before the ordinary business of the meeting wtus. proceeded with Mr; W. t Lyndon (president), made reference to • the loss sustained by the Dominion through Mr. JWV. F. 'Massey’s dearth, and asked those present to show their sympathy for Mrs. Massey- aiid family. This was done by all present standing in silence.

The president, gave a resume of the year’s activities of the branch. In "this connection he showed the branch to be very strong in membership, there being 55 paid up members, and he mentioned that it . would greatly simplify the secretary's work if all members Were to sign an order on their .factory to have their annual subscription deducted by the factory secretary. - • ' During the year.twelve meetings of the branch had been held. ' Air. Wood, of New 'Plymouth', gave a, demonstration on the internal economy of a cow, and this was much appreciated by those who attended. . Later, Mr. Wood gave a. valuable lecture bn contagious injamihlitis. - This was followed by an address from All. Ford, of Hawera, on spring ailments in dairy cattle. Mr. Jellyman’s lecture on, thatching was much appreciated, andAir. Buckeritlige cleared up many knotty points in his address, Mi*McAlpine’s visit to the district- hah been of great .'assistance to the union. Air. Deenn’s services as judge in the root growing competitions came in for special commendation. Owing to the epidemic the .annual show .haa ’been abandoned, but the’ children s classes would be gone on with at the school fair, to be held on the 29th Alay, the union donating the prizes. 'The following officers were elected: President, Air. \V, Lynclon (re-elected for the fourth year in .succession) ; vice-presidents, Messrs. 'P. Cameron and J. Hartley; secretary, Air. J. Duff; executive, ■ Messrs. ■ Brown, Cameron, Bowie, Dunn, Deegan, and Hartley ; auditor, Air. W. A. Brown; delegates to provincial' conference, Alessrs Hartley and Aron. ..'”7 Alessrs Hartley and Aroa were in-" structed to purchase - a suitable gift us a recognition of the secretary’s work on behalf of the union during the past ■year.. . . ", Prizes amounting' to 27s 6d were voted towards the children's cow judging competitions on . May 29. For the root-growing competitions the secretary received 19 entries. Air Deem is to be asked to act as judge. Great enthusiasm was shown . with b regard to the proposed farmers’ school' to be held in Mariaia from June 15 to June 22, practically all in the room signifying their intention -of being present. - - ...■' . ..' \ - It was decided to hold a ball to wards/the end of ’ June, a special meeting to be called at a later date' to make arrangements. . , At the next meeting to be ..held on . June 6 Air Brown will give a paper on artificial manures. TENNIS . DANCE. .

Owing to some error the tennis dance which is fixed for Wednesday next was advertised in Saturday’s Star for Friday, and I am asked by the committee to inform intending patrpns that the dance will take place on Wednesday. Excellent music, a first-class floor, and good supper are promised to all who attend. SCHOOL FAIR. ~ A strong ladies’ committee was formed at Friday’s meeting to run , the various stalls in connection with the forthcoming school fair on May .29, and. given a fine day, everything points to this function being a great success.
