Captain Amundsen, in & witeless message from King’s Bay, says: “The work of as'semibling the planes is proceeding iSafciafh'ctorLly. .Both ’planes; are now ashore ! with their engines fixed and .have .been tried with excellent results. They started easily, despite the hitter cold. The only work leinuioing is" to fix the wings in position. Provided unforseeu events do not occur, the ’planes should ~be ready for their trial flight -on Saturday week. The meteorologists and wifeless operators aboard the Erarn are busy receiving weather reports, and special notices are being received via Washington, from‘Stavanger. IB unfortunately has been found impossible to receive direct messajfes from St. Paul and Behring Strait. Several balloons are sent lip daffy ,to determine the direct ion and velocity of the higher winds. When the ’planes are finished observations, of temperature and moisture at a height of three thousand metres will be concluded. Ellsworth, both pilots and myself are daily testing the instruments arid are making observations with a view to gaining practice in the methods of navigation to be used during the flight. “After clear and bitterly cold weather for the last few" days, conditions are now mild, cloudy land foggv.”— Aus.-N.Z.
