LONGER HOURS.
EMPLOYERS’ PROPOSALS. FOR ENGINEERING TRADES. BY CABLE—TRESS ASSOCIATION —COTY’MGHT. LONDON, April 23. Replying to the Engineering Trade Union’s demand for 20s increase in wages, the employers submitted proposals to the forty trade unions concerned, suggesting increased hours in an attempt to reduce the cost of production, and so counter foreign competition. At present the men work 47 hours weekly at a shilling per hour plus a bonus of ten shillings. The employers propose fifty hours at a shilling ner hour, with a bonus of 12s. Nightworkers. now receiving time and twothirds will be increased from fortyseven to fifty-two and a half hours. A subcommittee of the trade unions expressed amazement at the proposal, which is being submitted to a meeting of the full executive, which adjourned till May 20th.—A. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
