ADRIFT IN A BOAT.
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. OF THE WAITOTARA PARTY. . TRAIN’S HEROISM. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. WANGANUI, April 6. The Waitotara fishing party had a terrible experience while adrift lasi night. It appears that an effort was made to reach Wanganui, and an anchor was dropped in the roadstead, hut the party failed in their efforts to signal to the shore. The boat subsequently broke adrift and drifted south. As the weather, increased in severity the desperate expedient of a forced landing at Wangaehu beach in the surf was attempted. Constable "Willetts, who was steering. was washed overboard, and the boat capsized. Train, a splendid swimmer, after reaching the shore, dashed into the surf and saved three of the others who were in desperate plight, including Constable Willetts. Train then struck inland, and after covering several miles reached a settler’s house, from where a rescue party proceeded to the beach. The police are searching the beach for Reimenschneider’s body. He was unable to swim.
[Constable Willetts was stationed in Haw-era at the time he was transferred to Waitotara.]
