Victoria commenced their match against Wellington to-day on a drying wicket that was in the bowlers’ favour. Mavne won the toss from Collins and sent the local side in. The Wellington side started badly, and batsmen from whom much was expected failed to get going. Ifiddletson was just getting into his stride when lie played one on. and Collins, after playing well for 128, snicked oner into Ellis’ hands. Dempster, McGirr and Badcoek, all batsmen of class, muslered ten runs amongst them. There were, live wickets down for 79 when Barclay joined Banks, and it was left to the colts to make the best stand of the innings. Barclay got his runs slowly, but Banks played confidently and scored at a good rate with crisp, clean strokes all round the wicket. Barclay was caught in the slips by Austin and his dismissal saw 172 on the hoard. The remaining batsmen failed to get double figures, and the innings closed for 209. Banks carried his bat for 7(1. He gave one cf the brightest and most polished displays seen here for some time. Liddieut and Hartkopf were the most successful bowlers. One wicket for 7 NOTES ON THE GAME. (Bv Telegraph.—Special to Star). WELLINGTON, March 6. In bright sunny weather, with, a gentle breeze, the Victorian team opened their North Island tour in Wellington to-day. After the heavy rain of yesterday the wicket was soft, but not difficult. Mayiie won the tosS and put Wellington in, and the first few wickets falling quickly justified the decision. Hiddleston, Badcoek and Dempster went cheaply, the first-named playing the ball on to his foot and thence into the wickets. Banks and Barclay made a splendid stand, putting oil 93 runs. The former, if luckv once or twice, played a valuable innings, scoring runs mostly on side play-. Barclay played soundly and with confidence. Collins is showing excellent form, and looks like a bagful of runs. \ Hartkopf and Liddieut, the visiting bowlers, are both spinning the ball well and keeping good length. Elbing showed pace, with length at the beginning, but fell away later. Under the circumstances, Wellington’s total of 205 is a good performance. Ellis was given out leg before at the end of the day’s play and seemed dissatisfied.
