Cosgnvve) to. instruct, the Standing Orders Committee to set up rules, which would debar divorce a. vinculo matrimonii. Mr. Cosgrave said the majority of Southern Irishmen held that the marriage sacrament could not be dissolved. Any attempt to legalise divorce would strike at the root of Irish social life.

Professor Thrift urged that, the motion wn= not fair to the Protestant minority. Tt would he a. further barrier against a. re-union with Northern Ireland. The motion was carried. There' aye now no. means b.v which persons in Southern Ireland can promote a Bill in the House of Lords for divorce.
