UNEQUAL STRUGGLE. DARWIN, Feb. 4. A racehorse, Comet, having a drink of water in the Katherine river, was seized by the, nose by . a large alligato. An unequal struggle followed. The horse was dragged completely- ’under water, but "repeatedly rose with the alligator hanging on with a bulldoggrip. The water washed into a. bloody foam for many yards round. The horse in its struggle, used its forefeet with terrible effect, tearing great lumps of skin and flesh out of the saurian’s forequarters. Finally, the horse was dragged under and drowned. ENGLISHMEN HOLD ALOOF. HOBART, Feb. 4. There was considerable comment over the English cricketers declining to he socially lionised. Three public functions were arranged in their favour, including a cripketer’s ball, none of which they attended. The reason was not stated.
