TONNAGE STATISTICS. BY CABLE —PEESS ASSOCIATION— COPYEIGH'i . LONDON, Jan. 20. Lloyd’s Register, in its annual summary of shipbuilding, show's that 924 mercantile vessels w r ere launched in the world during i 1924, the tonnage bein 2,247,000. The outyut of Great Britain and Ireland was 1,439,00 J tons, Germany 193,00 tons, United States 139,00 tons, Japan 72,000* tons, Holland 63,000 tons. The net increase compared with 1923 was about 605,000 tons, entirely due to the increase of 794,000 tons in Britain and Ireland offsetting the decrease of 179,000 tons abroad,- including 164,000 in Germany. The tonnage decreased nearly 4,900,00 tons as compared with the record year of 1919, when 7,145,000 tons were launched. The output of Britain and Ireland included 211,000 tons for owners residing abroad. The tonnage being constructed in the world on December 31 was 2,470,000, a net increase of 26,000 as compared with the twelve months before. The' decrease of 98,000 tons in Britain and Ireland was set-off by an increase of 124,000 tons abroad.
The world’s gross tonnage in June, 1924. amounted to 5,7530,000, as compared with 42,514,000 in June, 1919. The former includes 1,7154,000 tons of oil fuel fitted steamers. Six million tons of shipping were laid up throughout the world in July, 1914, of which over two-thirds were in the United States, but the United King-dom-figures. which were then 700 090. have now been reduced to 570.000. — Reuter.
