Desch, dean of the faculty of metallurgy at the University of Sheffield, states chat Avireless valves can he used to melt masses of steel. Within a feiv months large thermionic Avireless vula'cs will be installed in Sheffield furnaces. They Avill be specially useful in manufacturing nickel alloys. A 200-volt direct current is passed into the valves, Avhich convert it .into an alternating current of extremely high frequency. When the current passes through the metal the latter becomes far hotter than the crucible containing it. A piece of iron is melted by the Avireless valve before the crucible becomes warm.
