WATER SUPPLY.

DISCUSSION BY BOROUGH COUNCIL.

CARE, URGED ON HOUSEHOLDERS

A request from the Hawera Star for information as to- the daily water pressure recorded at the borough oHi cos was received at last- night's meeting of the council. Cr. Burdekin moved that this be supplied as desired. Ho added that tact was always shown by the paper, and they were anxious to do everything possible for the benefit of the town. It was considered that publication of low pressures would enjoin care on the part of ratepayers. An objection to giving low pressures was raised by Cr. Morrissey, who considered that it would be advisable to give an average, say, for a week. He said he did not think ratepayers >vould exercise care through seeing low pre-snres recorded. There might, he added, he a splendid pressure to-night and on Monday morning, when extra demands were made on the main, the would be low. Or. Ilninette was of opinion that a .record of a. low pressure would make householders careful. He suggested the weekly average pressure being given. On the ■suggestion, of Or. Bcid, it was decided to refer the matter to the general committee. The water Question was also brought up by Or Townsend, who urged a more careful and complete inspection of the water supply. He instanced a case of a property in which he had acquired an interest and on which he had found a tap running full bore. An adjoining paddock was swamped, evidencing tbe amount which had been used. He mentioned another instance of se-ious leakage and urged closer inspection. Cr. Brunette endorsed tbe suggestion. and added that a man should he put on at once for that purpose. Cr. Osborne said that, the instrument for detecting such leakages was available. The matter was referred to the engineer.
