EMPIRE SETTLEMENT.

VIE WED BY NEW ZEALANDER; Writing from Massachusetts, Mr. C. H. Haddrell, a New Zealander/at present in the United States, refers to the problem, of Empire settlement as viewed by ;a New Zealander after : a number of years- residence in. England and abroad. “There .is no doubt that England has more population than she can.well support,” Mr. Haddrell wrote,' “while Australia, Canada, arid New Zealand need people in the worst way. In View of this’ situation it is to be regretted that so many Britishers Come here, hut they undoubtedly come because the opportunities appear to be better than elsewhere. .‘ . There ave more Nova Scotians in the United l States than in Nova Scotia, and the place is going backward and becoming more' and more deserted. There are no young men in New 1 Brunswick, and very few girls; they all come here.. ./. Air the present schemes seem to insist on all newcomers being farmers or farm' hands, whereas I believe that they should be mixed. Australia and New /Zealand need industrialists la ; s much as farmers, arid the Empire cannot afford to lose 12,000 mechanics to the United States, as was the case last year. Australia and New Zealand are isolated, and need to be self-supporting in all respects.”
