HAWERA RETAILERS’ PLANS. DECORATIONS AND LIGHTING. The Hawera business people have made special arrangements to brighten the town for the Christmas and New rear week. The town wilt be prettily decorated with, greenery, special light-: mg and flags, ana paper streamers, of wmch there will be many, will add to the gaiety o fthe scene. The. committee request all business people to hoist private flags to assist in brightening the town. On Tuesday afternoon, December 23, at 2.30, Father Christmas will appear on a lorry to distribute sweets, etc., free to the children. The public of Hawera and surrounding districts will see Hawera at its best during Christmas week, and the Retailers Association is leaving no ston'e unturned to earn for Hawera an excellent name as a shopping centre. Ihe business people have arranged special lighting at the approaches to the town to assist the general scheme of decorating, and altogether Christmas and New Year weeks in Hawera (provided of course that Jupiter Pluvius behaves himself) should prove most enjoyable and memorable to all.

Mr Spratt submitted that the rate had only been pledged. it" was agreed that the proceedings should be continued and the new point argued afterwards. On the question of the withdrawal of consent, Mr Weston submitted thbt -once a consent under the circumstances was given there was no power of withdrawal. Further argument was advanced and cases cited in support. His Honor formally made the following order: “That it having been discovered that the rate had been made and levied by special resolution on August 12, 1924, the defendant County Council applies for leavtj to set up these further facts by a statement of defence and affidavit, and the plaintiff does not oppose the application; leave is granted accordingly, and the case stood over until after the vacation.” It was agreed that the parties might conclude their case by wrfatten argument submitted to his Honor. Air Soratt- said the point had taken him rather by surprise, and he thought he ought to have time in which to meet it. Ten guineas costs were allowed plaintiff on the day’s hearing.
