(From Our Own Correspondent.) SCHOOL CONCERT AND PRIZEGIVING. The Ararata school concert and prizegmng was held in the Public Hall on i l l may, December 12. The night was very line, and there was a large attendance of parents and friends. The tall had been prettily decorated for the occasion with flowers and greenery by the teacher (Miss Anthony) and " the elder pupils, two large pungas at the front corners of the stage giving a ■very fine effect. The concert commenced at 8 o’clock, Mr Larcom act-ing-chairman, first apologising for the absence, through sickness, of Mr Grant, chairman of the School Committee.. lhen followed the programme consisting of songs, singing games! dialogues and recitations, all of which m j- hearty applause from the audience. After the chairman had thanked teacher and pupils for the entertainment given the prizes were presented, this part of the programme affording great satisfaction to the chiltl 1 1 ! € "' mall books were also given to all little children not yet of school age. i 1 J jarcom then congratulated Miss Anthony on the way in which the school had been conducted during the year, drawing special attention to the ract that* the three Standard VI. pupils —Naomi Rayner, Henry Lundberg and Bruce Carroll—had gained their proficiency certificates, on their year’s worky all three having been exempted from attendance at a proficiency centre at the end of the year. This shield is awarded among all grade 1 and 2 schools throughout iaranaki for the best kept School grounds, experimental work, nature study and notebooks being also taken into account. . Last week calves reared by the children m connection.with the Boys’ and Girls Agricultural Club were judged at the school by Messrs McL’Dowie and Hoskin, Messrs Syme and Glasson qlso being present. A number of parents also showed their interest in the club by coming to watch the judging, The results were as follows .- Calf-reanng-Tom Wilson. 1, Terry Rayner 2 Frank Wilson 3. Dairy type—Frank Wilson 1, Edna Riley 2, Tom Wilson

Group judging for Group I. was to take place at Hawera; on Thursday, when the championship would also be decided. Regarding tliq arrangements lor the group judging, I should like to say a few words. Notice was first given in the paper that group judging for Group I. should take 1 place at wera on Tuesday, December 16. Later the teacher and children were told to take no notice of that, as Wednesday, December 17, was the day decided upon. As no further notification was received, either by post of by advertisement, the calves were taken to Hawera on Wednesday, 17th, by a settler who had kindly offered his, services. J.ne feelings of those concerned can be when they were told that the judging, had been arranged for Thursday, and the calves would have to be brought hack again next day. Three other schools of the groun also brought oalves to be judged. The officials of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club have always expressed the desire to promote further interest in the; club, but such casual treatment as the above is no encouragement to anyone, v.
