ELTHAM SCHOOL.

(From O'ur Own Correspondent.) END OF THE YEAR. An excellent open-air concert was given by the pupils of the Eltham School yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of parents present, and although most of tlio items were the result of the ordinary school work, they were heartily enjoyed. The following are the items rendered:—Mass drill; infants’ songs, “Oar Greetings to You,’V “The Little Nut Tree.” Primer HI.: Songs, “Playtime,” “Oh, Isn’t It Nice. | Standards I. and 11. : Songs, “Who Shall be Queen,” “We are the Heatbeibell” ; recitations, “When You Meet a Fairy,” “A Little Golden Fairy,” .“The Land of Story Rooks.” Standard 111.;. Songs, “Early one Morning,” “The Sea Dogs”; recitations, “The Cloud” (D. Nodder). “Autumn Leaves’’ (Ron Bary). ' Standard IV.: Songs, “Ye Banks and Braes,” “From Oberon in Fairyland,?’ “See Our Oars with Feathered Spray”; recitations, “The Village Schoolmaster” (King), “The Dog and the Lobster” (Vincent); solo, “Children’s Tears.” Standard V.: Songs, “Spring Song,” “The Meeting of the Waters” (Thelma Allen), “Summer is Passing By”; recitation, “Haiawatha” (Davis). Standard. VI. recitation, “The Graves of. Gallipoli” (Walker). Drill, Individual.

At the conclusion of the programme the various classes gave a very pleasing display of organised games, drills, etc. A very fine exhibit of the pupils’ work was displayed on the 'walls of the school, and on tables, which included map and object drawing: writing and plasticine work. , The headmaster and his staff have worked verv strenuously during the year, and the results have been very satisfactory to themselves and the parents.

The function will be continued today with swimming sports and presentation of attendance certificates, etc. SALVATION ARMY BOYS’ HOME. At the manager’s invitation, a number of friends assembled at the Home last evening for the annual prizegiving ceremony of the school, and were welcomed by Commandant Home, who explained that it was customary at the close of oacn school year to present each boy with a. book. The books had again been generously donated this year by Mr. H. G. Carman, ° for trine-, past- nseven years sfliown his .practical interest in the institution by donating the full , number of prizes. He apologised for the absence of Sir Walter and Lady Camcrpss, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Wilkinson, and the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Tayler). During the course of his remarks the Commandant stated that several boys were leaving the h°me this year, including two who had been in the institution five years. Others had finished their schooling and would be going to; positions. The boys had had a very successful year in "the school, and the teacher had worked unselfishly and energetically to attain good results, for which he expressed appreciation.

Mr. H. G. Carman was then asked to speak to the boys. He eaid that it was with very great pleasure that he attended the little function. . His best advice was for the boys to learn all they possibly could while at school, as they would need it when .they faced the responsibilities of life. It gave him much pleasure, to make the . donation: of the prizes. E. Bary (headmaster of the Eltham School) was the next speaker. He was sure, that the hoys were well ..00-ked after in the home, judging by their happy faces. He bad always been keenly interested in the home apd its work, a?id wished the boys and tue stall a. very happy Christmas time.

The Oomamndanfc then called upon Mr. O'. Hawken, M.P.. to say a. few words and to present the prizes. Mr. "Hawken referred to the happv associations connected _with the home and the excellent training received by the boys. He hoped they would, when leaving the institution, uphold the reputation of the home and that they would have good success. He then presented eah boy with a. valuable prize. Master Geril Baity was awarded the, gold medal and dux of the school and Master Ken. Morrison was awarded the silver medal. Commandant Home thanked the visitors for their attendance, including Mr. and Mrs. TTawken, Mr. Carman for the donation of the books. Dr. Cooper for free medical attendance during the vear, and the dentists of the town, Mr. 0. Tap.len and Mr. E. E. Carter, for free dental work to the boys; also to the tradespeople for their generosity and support and Mr. Ira Bridger for his work with the or ass hand. He also expressed appieciation of the work and loyalty of the staff and the . teachers, Messrs. Feirbmther and Bovett.

Daring the evening the boys rendered a number of company songs and recitations, etc., which were enjoyed. Mr. Hawken then called for three cheers for the manager and his wife and Commandant and Mrs. Home.
