(From Our Own Correspondent.) , MEETING OF RATEPAYERS. There was a good attendance at the meeting of ratepayers called for the purpose of discussing the advisability •of raising a loan lor reconstructing the main road. The chairman of the t Town Board, Mr. C. J. Preston, ex- . plained to the meeting the position of J the board in regard to financing the , expenditure for the upkeep of the . main roads. It was shown that the board could not maintain the road up | to the-standard set out in the Main | : Highways Bill on their present income without raising a loan. A number of questions were asked by those present and were satisfactorily answered by the chairman, after which the following resolution, proposed by • Mr. J. Avehbold, and seconded by Mr. C. Goad, was carried unanimously: “That this meeting of ratepayers requests the Town Board to take the necessary steps to raise a loan of £3OOO for the reconstruction of the main roads.” > A vote of thanks to the ehairmna. terminated the meeting. t TOWN; BOARD. At the monthly meeting of the board there were present: Commissioners Preston (chairman), C. Goad, • JP. Leydon and T. Lloyd. Mr. Hurliman ivaited on the board to .ask the reason why no action had .been taken in connection with hie ' letter to the previous meeting, in which he complained of a resident having a fence allegedly encroaching six feet on the roadway. The board decided to,-take no further action in the matter. Mr. R. Burgon also waited on the board to. see if they would stop residents burning hedge trimmings on the roadway. After hearing Mr. Burgon’s views, clie board decided they would give the matter further consideration. Mr. A. B, McEwen applied for permission to erect a signboard over the footpath opposite his business premises on Mountain Road. The application was granted, subject to the usual conditions. The board’s foreman, Mr. S. Franklyn, who is still an inmate of the Hawera hospital, forwarded his resignation. The resignation was accepted. , . A- letter from the Department of Health regarding the appointment of a sanitary inspector, ' was'• held' over till next meeting. It was resolved to: hold a special 'meeting on January 20 for the. purpose of fixing the statutory half- ' holiday. The dog: registration fee for the ensuing year was fixed. The clerk was instructed to order 50 dog collars, with brass tags for preference. A resolution was carried and ordered to be sent to the Deputy Official Assignee: “That the board is not satisfied with the statements of assets made by a resident who, had recently turned bankrupt, and was. owing the board a considerable sum for rates, and considers that he should undergo a public examination.” The. clerk was instructed to write, to Mr. H: Glentworth asking him to remove the live hedge which lie Had planted across Kate Street, and also to notify him that he must fence his section, as the board will require the road after March 31. It was left in the chairman’s and Cr. Goad’s hands to procure a horse and cart. Mr. D. On Friday, December 19, the annual concert will be held. The children have been practising assiduously for some time past under the teachers’ supervision, and, judging by the progress the scholars have made parents and others attending will be sure of a treat.
