(From Our (hen Correspondent,) SGHOO'L COMMITTEE. The school committee met last night in • the C.E.M.S: room. Present: Messrs. I. Jf. Bridger (chair), R. Peppereli (secretary), Maynard, Gower, McKayj and the headinaster (Mr. E. Bary). The following report was 'received from the headmaster: —■Attendance.— This has been greatly affected by the .prevalence of whdoping cough, chicken-, pox and measles, ..The attendance to date for the present quarter averages 963. A good week this week will be ..sufficient to raise theschool to a grade OA, which will give an increased staff for next year'. Tlie present roll niiihber is 22G hoys arid 190 girls, making a total of 41 (5. School *l(ay.—The staff has everything in readiness for this on Thursday, when we hope to give as good a programme of items as are given in concert work. Chute.-—■ This has not been attended to yet. Closing day.—The .school will close for Chriistm'aA vacation oii Friday, 19th inst. Compliments.—The staff joins with me in extending to you and your committee "the compliments of the season. -; - The roll number of 416 is a record for the school, and it was decided to assist with the at the school on Thursday next. . The chairman reported that the plan of the lay-out of the new school grounds had been received, and he submitted same for the consideration of the committee. Mr. R. G. Riddling, senior instructor in agriculture for the EclucaCnu Board, had carefully gone inttf the matter and taken considerable trouble in preparing the plans and specifications and deserved the heartitest thanks of the committee. On the motion of Messrs. McKay ami Gower, it Was decided to adopt the plan as submitted, and. that Mr. Riddling be thanked for his trouble. Mr. McKay asked whether the public meeting would be heid before Christinas, at which the public would be asked to assist with the cost of the work. He was of the opinion that no time should he lost in getting the scheme under way. 1 lie chairman replied stating Hurt it had taken considerable time to get the plans, and agreed that it was necessary to call the public meeting early and solicit the support of -parents in the scheme. But it was not possible to have a public meeting and do anything before Christmas. The lay-out of the grounds would cost roughly £SOO, of which amount the committee would have to find £250. A public meeting would be called early in the New Year, -and he hoped the public would assist the committee with the necessary finance. The secretary of the swimming club (Mr. Powell) wrote asking the committee to assist with the carnival to be held on the 14th January, and also suggesting alterations )to the swimming hours to provide an extra half hour for lady swimmers. The matter was referred to the baths committee with power to act. The chairman reported that the new dressing shed had been completed by (lay labour, and the concrete work was to be done bv a working bee of those interested, organised by Mr. Maynard. Other small repairs were receiving attention. ' -Accounts, amounting to £lO 10s were passed for payment.
