TOLL-GATES.

MEAN DOUBLE TAXATION. WHEN NEW ACT OPERATES. HAWERA PROTEST. A motion urging the abolition of ~ toll-gates on December 31, on the - eve of the new' Motor Vehicles Act coming into force, was passed by the Hawera Borough Council last night, it being pointed out by the mover that.if toll-gates were allowed to be’ continued after that date, users of the public highway in this district would be doubly taxed. Cr H. B. Burdekin was responsible for the motion, which read as follows: “That a letter be sent to the Minister in charge of the Motor Vehicles Bill pointing out the unfair position which will be created by tlie coming in force of the Bill on the Ist prox. unless all toll-gates cease operations on December 31. Taxation will be doubled as a result, and the Council asks the Minister to make regulations to, abolish all toll-gates ,as from the 31st inst.” Cr J. G. Osborne seconded. f Cr Morrissey said lie was not ; going to support the motion as lie was informed that .the Hawera County Council had made arrangements to abolish their toll-gates on March 31. He felt sure that the toll-gates would go on that date. The Mayor (Mr L. A. Bone) said he did not think there was anything definite in the direction indicated by Gr Morrissey. The motion was then put and carried with one dissentient voice.
