HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING , ROUTINE MATTERS. The monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough .Council was held last night, when there were present : The Mayor (Mr L. A. Bone), and Councillors Osborne, Burdekin, Goodwin, Morrissey, 1 own send. Brunette, Champion, and Reid. The Hawera Amateur Swimming Club were granted the use of the baths for the purpose of holding a carnival on Friday evening next. The Park Tennis Club forwarded for the Council’s approval a plan of the proposed pavilion to he erected on the grounds at present occupied by them. The question of Sunday play cropped . up, and Cr. Reid. said he would be against any building erected on the grounds unless the club gave an assurance that they would prohibit Sunday , playing. r , The Mayor said that the Ciub mem- ; bers wo-uld be well advised to do away i until Sunday playing. They might ; jeopardise the rights of others to the ’ extent of losing the use of the grounds 1 altogether. The 1 New -Zealand Automobile Union had approached the Government requesting that an Ordor- • in-Council be passed authorising Rea] . bodies to allow motor-oars to stand in approved parking places without . lights. The South Taranaki Assoj-ia- . tion felt that it was no use appro&ch- . iiig the Borough Council in the matter , until such a time as ? the Government , had passed an Order-in-Council on the » lines suggested by the Automobile ■ Union. The Council decided to write :o the , Automobile Association supporting them . in their endeavours to obtain the necessary special legislation.Permission was granted Messrs Tysons, Foord and Keilar to erect an illuminated sign at the edge of uho f«-ot- , path opposite their premises. , The erection of a gate on the Waihi , frontage of the Park, to admit vehicles, was left in the hands of Cr. Townsend. COMMITTEE REPORT. The general committee’s report was ! as follows:—■■■ • A deputation representing the South Taranaki Automobile Association and the Hawera Chamber of Commerce i waited on the committee (1) as to erection of signboards designed to bring through traffic by way of High ; Street; (2) as to contribution of £6 towards publicity campaign; and (3) as to assisting in obtaining legislation or regulations enabling local bodies to dispense with lighting of cars left at certain specially appointed parking places. Recommendations. —That council pay half costs of erecting signboards, but not to exceed £10; that the Mayor and Cr. Osborne be a committee to arrange with Automobile Association re lettering and erection; that council grant £6 as a contribution to the Automobile Association re special advertising of borough in the Dominion; that a letter be sent thanking Park Croquet Club for contribution; that A M. Conroy be granted permission to show pictures on Christmas night; that Ors. Osborne and Goodwin be appointed to approve of programme; that Mr. F. G. Coleman be appointed sanitary inspector for the Borough of Hawera; that Hospital Board’s application for extraordinary water supply to new hospital be granted—viz., 3in. pipe for fire fighting, from: which l-}in. lead is to be taken off for ordinary hospital purposes; also that board be written to stressing the condition that under no circumstances shall the 3in. pipe be used (except by means of Din. lead) unless required for fire prevention; that Hospital Board’s request re Allen be granted subject to engineer’s approval; that South Taranaki Automobile Association’s reply re spot lights be referred to by-laws committee to deal with; that by-laws committee consider question of by-laws dealing with distance of buildings in outer area from side lines; that correspondence from borough solicitor re alterations 'and amendments of bylaws be left in hands of by-laws committee to deal with; that librarian’s report be received and matters requiring attention be left in hands of chairman \vith power to act; that matters mentioned bv Town Clerk with reference to certain areas in cemetery be referred to cemetery committee for consideration. The report was adopted. OFFICERS’ REPORTS. The engineer’s progress report stated: —The pond near borough stables has been cleaned out; cost about £34. Bitumen painting of paths has commenced. Sand is being screened to try to get the best surface possible. Path at park has been formed in tarmacadam. It has yet to get a coat of refined tar, followed by a c-oat of bitumen. Floors of four small houses at park have been coated in clay to be followed by a coat of tar. The usual maintenance works have been attended to. The borough inspector’s report stated: —House inspection has been carried out in the following streets—viz., South Road, Gladstone Street, Cameron Street, and the greater portion of Collins Street, all being in a satisfactory condition and any necessary notices being 'sent to owners. Sbow r traffic was well conducted on both days, no accidents or collisions being reported. Two applicants for drivers’ licenses were tested and passed. One dog was registered daring the month, and two destroyed. Total fees ss. The sanitary inspector’s report statech —During the month of .November two plumbing and two drainage permit's were issued. No drains were inspected. Eighty-three premises were inspected and any necessary notices issued. In connection with the draining of the Bank of New Zealand new nremis°s, it has become apparent that the bank and Grant and 1 Campbell shared a combined drain running down the bank side entrance.
