BOWLING.

BANNER MATCH. HAWERA B v. PATEA. The Hawerd B team met Patea on the local green in a banner match, on Saturday afternoon last. Mr Adamson accorded the visitors a hearty welcome, with apologies for the state of the weather, and he hoped they would not think that “Hawera had the wind up” too much. Mr Christensen (on behalf of the Patea Club), in a very witty and humorous reply, thanked the local members for the good game they had been treated to. All had had a most pleasant day out, with a full share of enjoyment. He would call for three cheers for the ladies who had provided afternoon tea, and the players who had given them each a pleasant game.

The day proved anything bnt pleasant for bowlers, as the players had a very strong gale to contend with right through the game. It was frequently a case of starting off a bowl and waiting to see where the wind would land it. However, under such adverse circumstances the aggregate .scores were kept on a fairly even balance, so much so that at the 21st head (21 heads being decided on) the scores were equal, which necessitated the playing of an extra head. The play in this head was very keen, and all were doing their best to combat the eccentricities of the wind. The result went in favour of Patea by the narrow margin of one point—77-76. The following are the scores. (Hawera players being mentioned first) : Wills, Tidswell. Maslin, R. Hicks 17; Cronin, D. Jones. F. McKenna, Elliott 19. Winks, Hobbs, Adamson, Hulbert 22; O mushy, Bremer, Boa gey, Patterson 21. Squire. Wylie, Reed, Fov 11 ; Dwyer, T. Sheuhan, J. McKenna, Christensen ten sen 2T. Dillon, Burdekin, Shaw, Clarke 26; Rook, Mercer, Sheahan. Williams 16. Totals—-Hawera 76, Patea 77. In a buttons match on Saturday afternoon the holders (A. Grant, Dahl, Goodwin and Mills) defeated Sayers, Squire. Crutch and McGregor by a .substantial majority. On Wednesday Park meet Hawera A in a banner mateh on the latter’s green.
