A STREET DISTURBANCE.

POLICE TAKE ACTION. AN OFFENDER FINED. A disturbance in High street oii the night of November 20 resulted in the Hawera police taking action at the Magistrate’s Court to-day against the two persons concerned. Thofnas Malcolm, one of the offenders, was charged with. striking one Angus Campbell, and Campbell was charged with behaving in a threatening manner in a public place. Sergeant Henry" said that on the night in question Malcolm was ih the Victoria Cafe having tea. Campbell, who was under the influence of liquor, came in and engaged in an argument with Malcolm, with the result that the proprietor put Campbell out. Campbell, however, returned* and this time was put out with the assistance of Malcolm, but out in the street Campbell rushed Malcolm, who hit twice and sent his assailant to the ground. The sergeant said that Malcolm had nt> .right to interfere in the matter, and he mentioned that defendant had been twice previously convicted for similar offences. Malcolm was fined £2, with 7s court costs. Evidence was called in 'connection with the charge against Campbell, but as none of the witnesses actually saw the blows struck and what happened in the street before the police arrived the information was dismissed.
