TOLL-GATES.
FURTHER DISAPPROVAL. EGMONT COUNCILLORS’ ATTITUDE. At yesterday’s meeting of the Egmont Coiinty Couneil further evidence was afforded of the dissatisfaction felt in many quarters concerning the operation of toll-gates, and after a brief consideration of the question, which had been fully ventilated at a previous meeting, the Council again decided to make representations to the proper authority urging the abolition of the system.
The subbed was introduced by Cr J S. Tosland, who was Very emphatic in his ojrinion that the Council should take a definite stand and declare disapproval of toll-gates. In common with others throughout the- Dominion, continued Cr Tosland, motor users in the county were contributing to road maintenance through special taxes levied for the purpose, and it was grossly unfair to extort the additional payments collected by way of tollgates, which he referred to ns an infliction which should not be tolerated any longer. Certain gates were being dispensed with, but none should be permitted to remain, and he thought that if assurances that all gates would be done away with were not received road users should refuse to pay the fees and take the consequences, thus bringing before the public right throughout the country the disapproval with which the system was regarded. Cr Tosland’s opinion was unanimously approved, and on his motion, seconded by Cr H. Donald, it was decided to again communicate with the authorities, expressing the Council’s emphaticpretest against the collection of road revenue by the toll-gate method, and strongly urging that all such gates be abolished.
