CATHOLIC BAZAAR.

/ MANY PEOPLE ATTEND

SATURDAY NIGHT’S PROGRAMME

The Catholic bazaar was well patronised on Saturday night) a great deal of interest centring around the first two pulls of the tug-of-war tournament.

The stall-holders and those' whose duties lay in the direction of selling tickets all did good business, and as a result the funds for the erection of the new church were considerably augmented.

A Christmas tree, proved a great attraction for the children, and many little ones were delighted with the presents they received from this treasure house. A portion of the bazaar which was welL patronised, was the tea rooms, where numerous dainties were served. Mesdames Douglas, Cudbv and Morrissey were in charge. * The tug-ofrwar tournament, which will continue each night this week/ provided two interesting contests, altogether three teams being seen in action. Mr J. Russell capably carried out the duties of judge, and Mr J. R. Corrigan made an accurate timekeeper. Mr B. McCarthy assisted with the arrangements, and announced the details in respect of the competing teams. Each of the contests was of three minutes’ duration. The first pull was between Kaupokonui B and ICapuni 8,, and the teams were as follow: Kaupokonui B—S. Hannah, B. Horgan, A. Griffin, Kimbley, J. Campbell and McKain (skip). Kapuni B—Kehely, Bryant, McCarthy, Saunders, O. Hunt and H. McCarvilu (skip). The Kaupokonui team’s weight was announced as 56st 61b, and the Kapuni team’s weight as 58st Jib. During the first minute the Kapuni men did all the work, and secured about; an inch of rope. When two minutes had gone they held an advantage of two inches, but during the last 30 seconds the Kaupokonui men pulled hard, and won with the rope going through their opponents’ hands. They gained the verdict by about 12 inches. The next pull was between Kapuni B and' Kaupokonui A. The Kapuni team was not the same owing to the fact that McCarthy, who was a substitute, brought in at the last minute, had been dispensed with and Bulmer had taken his place. The Kaupokonui A team was as follows: Min bin nick, C. Smith, Jorensen, Reardon, Miller and McKain (skip). The Kapuni men weighed in at 60st and the Kaupokonui men at 59st 2Jib.

The Kapuni team secured an advantage and hung on, and despite anything their opponents could *do they were not deprived of the victory. They obtained the verdict hv about an inch. To-night the teams competing will be Kaupokonui C, Kapuni B and Riverdale.

Monsman’s orchestra will also he in attendance.
