STRIKE TROUBLES
COMPANY DECLARED BLACK. SCENES AT FREMANTLE,. SHIP’S PASSENGERS HINDERED. BY CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION —COPYBIGHT ' SYDNEY, Dec. C. The marine transport group has declared the Newcastle and Hunter River Company “black.” This company’s vessels are at present running :r.der volunteer crews. PERTH, Dec. 0. When West Australian passengers for the liner Orcades arrived at the quay at Fremantle awaiting to be transferred to the vessel which was lying in the roadstead owing to the strike, the union picket intimated that instructions had been received not to permit passengers to proceed to the vessel 1 and the instructions would be carried cut. Shortly, after a strong force of police arrived and formed a circle round the passengers and baggage arid the picket tsood back. "When the steamer Taiwan wris leaving the wharf union pickets adopted their previous attitude of hampering the movements cf-boats. The stem lines were cast off safely, but . it was necessary for one hawser to be cut before the ship could be manoeuvred into the stream. .
The Disputes Committee decided that there should be. no interference with tying up or releasing any boat at Fremantle, and in connection with the Orcades that she was not “black,” and was therefore entitled to have passengers taken to . her. Further, if _in order to give effect to the foregoing the Government should find it necessary to provide police, the. committee is of oniuion that such police should be provided.
