THE ANCIENT QUEST.

TRANSMUTATION OF METALS

NEW YORK, Nov. 13. The Scientific American, announces that it will direct an attempt to convert quicksilver into- gold in experiments already under way by Professor Sheldon, of the New York University. Professor Sheldon’s efforts will consist of an attempt to confirm by a different process the results achieved by Professor Adolph Miethe. of Berlin. A duplicate of Professor Miethe’s apparatus has been sent to New York. It comprises a quartz lamp and electric paraphernalia. The theory is that a current of 170 volts and am undetermined amperage will crack the atoms of quicksilver, leaving gold. Professor Miethe recently said that his discovery would have no immediate effect on the value of gold because of the excessive cost of production.
