HAWERA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING. DR, GUNN’S WORK. Dr. Elizabeth Gunn waited upon the Htiue,i a- Scnool Committee last night and explained the methods, system and objects of medical inspection, and emphasised the necessity of tooth-brush drill. Mr J. W. Harding (chairman) presided over a full attendance of committee members. Dr. Gunn was given a- sympathetic hearing, aiicl at the conclusion of the discourse a vote of thaiiks was accorded lief. I lhe chairman explained that although the committee had nothing whatever to do- with tlie medical officer, they could approve o,r disapprove of the methods employed. Further than that, they coulcl do nothing in the matter. ’ N o action was taken by the committee. In connection with the Christmas tree ceiebfatio.li for th© infants, as suggested in the headmaster’s report, members of th© committee offered ,to assist individually in whatever way possible. The question ot the annual school picnic was considered, and it was decided. to keep tlie matter in view. Minor repairs were reported by the visiting committee, and, it was* left with the secretary to> deal with them - The suggested establishment of ' a junior high school was briefly mention©tx by the' chairman, who asked members to look into the question with the view to bringing the matter forward if deemed necessary at a later date' The chairman suggested that the school, in conjunction with other primary schools, should endeavour to establish school exhibits at the A. and B- Show. He particularly mentioned exhibits of handwriting. > The headmaster reported that the roll number now stood at 718, white the average attendance was only 576. The very large number of absentees was due almost entirely to epidemic diseases. The half-yearly promotion tests were now completed, and the results would be issued in a few days. The Annual proficiency examination for St.' VI pupils, would be held next week on Friday, December o. Twenty-five pupils had been exempted from the examination as a fesult of the headmaster’s examination; ■* As the holidays, commenced in three weeks, he would like to suggest some little celebration for thj* infants, say a Christmas tree and refreshments. He thought that the' mothers would gladly assist if they were’asked. School swimming had been commenced, and it was most unfortunate that the school had iio baths cf its °™. However, until a better supply of water was available it seemed useless to discuss the matter.—The report was adopted.
